In spite of the victory of the head of government's party, the outgoing government coalition suffered a defeat, notably due to the collapse of the social democrats of the Labour Party (PvdA), led by Lodewijk Asscher, who won 5.7% of the vote and 9 seats (-29). "A dramatic loss" stressed the latter. The slow death of social-democracy is a strong trend across all of Europe.

Janos Ader re-elected as President of Hungary

Outgoing head of State Janos Ader, supported by the Alliance of Young Democrats-Civic Union (FIDESZ-MPP), the party of the Prime Minister Viktor Orban, was re-elected as President of Hungary by the Orszaggyules, the only chamber in Parliament, on 13th March in the second round of voting.

Constitutional referendum in view

On 12th March the Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny announced that a referendum would be organised to amend the Constitution to allow Irish citizens living outside of its territory including in Northern Ireland, to vote in the presidential election.

The British Parliament gives the greenlight to trigger article 50

On 16th March British Secretary of State for Brexit David Davis announced that Queen Elizabeth II had given her greenlight to the draft bill on article 50. On 20th March the British government announced the triggering of article 50 on 29th March thereby opening the official procedure to the UK's exit of the European Union.

On 13th March the Scottish First Minister Nicolas Sturgeon announced that she would ask to organise a referendum on Scotland's independence between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019 whilst the launch of Brexit is imminent.

On 15th March the Swedish government published a report on which it highlights its three priorities for the EU: employment and growth, a more ambitious climate, energy and environment policy and a policy regarding migrants and refugees based on solidarity.

The Ukrainian Parliament ratified the free-trade agreement concluded with Canada on 15th March. This agreement should enable the removal of customs duties within the next 7 years.
Payment of 600 million € to Ukraine
20 March 2017
On 16th March the European Commission approved a payment of 600 million € in aid to Ukraine. This brings the total amount of assistance granted by the EU to Ukraine to 2.81 billion € ie the biggest amount ever granted by the Union to a third country in this context.

According to a study by Eurostat on 16th March 1,204,300 primo-asylum seekers lodged a request for international protection in the Member States of the European Union in 2016.

Employment rising
19 March 2017
The number of people in work increased by 0.3% in the euro zone and by 0.2% in the Union European in the 4th quarter 2016 in comparison with the previous quarter according to estimates published by Eurostat on 15th March.
Annual inflation rising

According to a Eurostat study on 16th March the annual inflation rate of the euro zone lay at 2% in February 2017, against 1.8% in January, that of the EU lay at 1.9% in February 2017 against 1.7% in January.

Ai Weiwei Exhibition in Prague

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei unveiled his biggest work of art to date in the grand gallery of the Palace of Veletrzni in Prague. "The Law of the Journey" represents a giant boat of refugees, devoted to recent migratory events. It is on show until 7th January 2018.
