On 15th April last the Sobrania the only chamber in the Macedonian Parliament was dissolved by 79 of the 120 MPs and early general elections were convened for 5th June by the Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski (VMRO-DPMNE). The Parliament is monocameral and has 120 members who are elected by proportional representation for four years in six constituencies each electing 20 MPs. Five political parties are represented in Parliament at present: the VMRO-DPMNE of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, the SDSM, opposition party led by Branko Crvenkovski; the Albanian Democratic Party (PDS-PDSh); the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI-BDI), a member of the present government coalition; the Party for a European Future (PEI).

What are we celebrating?

1 January 1970

robert_schuman_3.jpg
The Robert Schuman Foundation has created a special page for 9th May in celebration of Europe Day. You can read or re-read the declaration made by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on 9th May 1950 in which he announces the creation of the European Community of Steel and Coal (ECSC). This text is said to herald the birth of the EU. You can also see the images of the main moments of Robert Schuman's life. There are explanatory sheets illustrating what we are celebrating exactly on 9th May and which recall who the main players in the birth of Europe were. Moreover there is a calendar that brings together all of the main events organised across Europe on this occasion. As part of our project "Women for Europe-the European Citizens' Initiative" answer our on-line questionnaire on women and Europe; Europe Day gives women the chance to express themselves: it's up to you!
