Foreign interference poses a major threat to European democracies by undermining public trust, manipulating information and disrupting electoral processes. Given these strategies of destabilisation, the European Union must strengthen cooperation, its protective measures and its political sovereignty. The defence of democracy also relies on citizens' engagement, their critical thinking and their vigilance in the face of disinformation.

France's mounting debt raises major economic and political challenges, notably the increase in the cost of borrowing and a loss of confidence on the part of the financial markets. Bringing the government deficit under control is becoming crucial, but this involves difficult choices between cutting spending, promoting economic growth and maintaining purchasing power. The key issue is to find a credible and sustainable fiscal path without undermining citizens' well-being or jeopardising future investment.

In a speech delivered in Metz on 28 September, during his apostolic journey to France, Pope Leo XIV paid a heartfelt tribute to Robert Schuman – the full text of which we reproduce here – as part of a reflection on the roots and future of Europe. Peace, unity, dialogue, human dignity and respect for the law emerge as the essential foundations of the European project. In the face of contemporary challenges, the future of Europe rests on a balance between fidelity to its roots, openness to others and the building of lasting solidarity.

The world is undergoing a profound upheaval in international relations, marked by the erosion of international law and the rise of power politics. Rivalry between major powers, rearmament, new technologies and regional crises are redefining the global balance of power. Climate change and artificial intelligence are also accelerating economic and geopolitical transformations. Ultimately, these upheavals raise questions about the future of democracy, multilateralism and the emergence of a new multipolar world.

Caught between its Christian heritage, the rise of nationalism, and the affirmation of religious pluralism, Europe must adapt and find a new balance. On the occasion of the Pope's visit to France, it is worth recalling the Church's position on European integration. With Pope Leo XIV, the term "Christian roots" could take on a new meaning—no longer serving to exclude, but rather to defend human dignity, the rule of law, and coexistence. His stop in Metz, the birthplace of Robert Schuman, is significant in more ways than one.
