The Schuman Report on Europe, State of the Union 2021

4 June 2021
The annual reference book on Europe is now available in digital version.

A year ago, the Covid-19 crisis hit the world hard. As of March 2020, the pandemic disrupted the lives of Europeans as it challenged the political agenda and priorities set by the renewed European institutions in 2019.

What seemed unthinkable suddenly became possible everywhere in the world.

Initially, to combat the spread of the virus, outbreaks were contained, borders closed, and people's vision shrank.

However, Europeans have succeeded in finding a sense of life together. European coordination took shape in a spectacular way with an unprecedented recovery plan, adopted by the European Council on 21 July 2020. This decisive year has demonstrated once again Robert Schuman's principle that Europe is made "by concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity." But the scale of the crisis requires a creative response to design the success of this economic recovery and the political tools that it demands. In Europe as elsewhere, nothing will ever be the same again.

The Schuman Report on Europe, State of the Union 2021, a reference work for European decision-makers, offers its readers a review of these achievements and the new forms of solidarity, focusing closely on the profound political and economic changes that are now underway. An entire section is devoted to Europe's role in the world.

The book also features original maps that summarise essential European and global issues, as well as a unique set of commented statistics, useful in gauging the Union's strengths and weaknesses.

The Schuman Report 2021 on the State of the Union, edited by Pascale Joannin, is published by Marie B in the collection Lignes de repères.
