Commemorative Ceremony at the Salon de l'Horloge

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Robert Schuman, the French Minister for European Affairs, Thierry Repentin organised a commemorative ceremony at the Quai d'Orsay in honour of Robert Schuman, Father of Europe, during which the Chairman of the Robert Schuman Foundation, Jean-Dominique Giuliani, delivered a speech. European leaders paid tribute to Robert Schuman on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death. The President of the Commission José Manuel Barroso made a declaration in which he insisted on Robert Schuman's importance to the European project. The President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy signed an article in the French newspaper "La Croix" stressing the qualities of Europe's founding father. The Robert Schuman Foundation has put on line all of the texts devoted to the 50th anniversary of Robert Schuman's death.

The Chairman of the Robert Schuman Foundation, Jean-Dominique Giuliani delivered a speech in the Salon de l'Horloge in tribute to Robert Schuman. "So where does this world fame of a French personality who shied away from the limelight come from? It was a rare accomplishment of a lifetime - that of taking responsibility for and carrying politically the European project, of having pacified our continent and of having opened up a new chapter for hundreds of millions of Europeans," he explained to an audience of around 100 people who had gathered for the occasion. The French Minister for European Affairs, Thierry Repentin, also gave a speech in tribute to Robert Schuman.

The Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies organises an open lecture by Jean-Dominique Giuliani, President of the Robert Schuman Foundation.

The lecture, titled “Democratic Resilience in Europe in Times of Polarisation,” is organized in cooperation with the French Embassy in Tallinn and the Institut français d’Estonie, as part of the French Week in Tartu. The event opened by Ms. Sophie Coumel, Director of the Institut français and Cultural Counsellor, and  moderated by Dr. Stefano Braghiroli, Associate Professor of European Studies at our institute, .marks the concluding activity of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “REPAIR - Rejuvenating Democracy in the EU”, led by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies and supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme.
